Esports Prize Pool
Imagine playing an esport game for a prize pool of millions of dollars!
Your team wins, lifts up the trophy and receives a check. The feeling of winning with your team is great and you earn millions. Crazy thought, right? Or, has that now become possible?
Recently, all sports prize pools have been on the rise and industry experts say it is in the realm of possibility for us to see multi-million dollar tournaments reaching hundreds of millions over the next several years. Currently, major esport tournaments have huge prize pools capable of making their winning team millionaires. The biggest esports tournament is “The International” and is turning out new millionaires for those grabbing the top spot.
The Biggest Esports Tournament
The International is an annual Dota 2 tournament hosted by the game’s developer, Valve Corporation. In 2017, The International featured the biggest prize pool in the history of esports tournaments with $25 million in prizes. Team Liquid won first place taking home $10 million in prize money.
This shows a significant increase from their first tournament in Cologne which offered a total prize pool of $1.6 million. Valve started a revolution by offering large prize money in esports since no other tournament before The International had ever featured a prize pool of more than $100,000 dollars. Na’Vi were the first crowned champions taking home $1 million, but this was just the beginning.
In 2013, Valve completely changed sports prize pools by bringing crowd funding into play. In-game items could be purchased by players and 25 percent of those sales were added into the prize pool. These items gave benefits to the players in the game, while also increasing the prize pool.
With the crowd funding, the prize pool increased to $2.8 million the second year, and there was nothing stopping the rise of prize pools after that point. Since then, the prize pool has increased each year. In 2014, it was $10 million, followed by $18 million in 2015, then $20 million in 2016 and its biggest $25 million last year.
Bigger Than TV Shows
The way The International has continued to grow, we might see a prize pool of $100 million dollars by 2025. This would make online video gaming and viewership more popular than the Super Bowl. However, it is not likely that people will remain interested in Dota 2 over a long period of time. If Dota 2 doesn’t keep its popularity, The International will not be able to sustain its growth in the coming years. So, what about that $100 million prize pool, will it just remain a fantasy or will they develop new ways to keep the interest of their loyal fan base?
Even if Dota 2 does not hit the $100 million prize pool, we know there are other games that will emerge and capture the interest of the gamers and its audience. The International has proven its capability in making esports tournaments successful.
We know others are following the trail that The International has created. Maybe over the next few years, another version of Dota will launch and break all previous records. Regardless, the $100 million esport tournament will inevitably happen, so if you’re a gamer we suggest you hone your skills and prepare to have the opportunity to earn millions of dollars in near future.
